A Catholic teaching and referral hospital serving Mwea since 1962
Our Lady of Lourdes Mwea Hospital (OLLMH) is a Catholic institution run by the Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Nyeri, who are the sole proprietors of the facility, in collaboration with the Catholic Diocese of Murang'a. It is a registered non-governmental organization (NGO) with the mandate of delivering affordable and accessible health services to all, especially the poor and vulnerable.
OLLMH is one of the largest County Referral (Tier 3) hospitals in Kirinyaga County, serving a large and diverse population of approximately 500,000. The hospital started in 1962 as a dispensary, was promoted to a health centre in 1968, and grew into a modern referral hospital after upgrading in 1979.
From a small dispensary to a modern teaching and referral hospital.
Our Lady of Lourdes Mwea Hospital began as a small Catholic mission dispensary, established by the Sisters of Mary Immaculate to serve the Mwea community.
Growing demand for healthcare services led to the dispensary being promoted to a full health centre, expanding its capacity to serve more patients.
A major upgrade transformed the health centre into a modern County Referral (Tier 3) hospital, equipped to handle complex cases and serve as a referral point for the region.
Beyond healthcare, the hospital became a teaching and training facility — offering Diploma in Nursing, internship programmes for medicine and clinical medicine students, and attachment for pharmacist technologists, laboratory technologists, and social workers.
Launched the S.M.I Diagnostic Centre equipped with a 16-slice Sensation CT Scan, bringing advanced diagnostic imaging to the Mwea community.
